In February, Green Bay Packers legendary quarterback Brett Favre filed a defamation lawsuit against Pat McAfee and Shannon Sharpe. Favre alleged that the two sports analysts dragged his name through the mud and claimed he was responsible for the Mississippi Welfare Scam of which he was accused. The Hall of Fame quarterback asked both TV personalities to rescind their statement and asked McAfee to delete the episodes from his YouTube in which he ever talked about Favre.
The first reaction to being served with a lawsuit is panic for an average human being. However, former NFL punter turned analyst, Pat McAfee thought it was a joke played by his friends. While talking with Front Office Sports, McAfee revealed that initially, he thought the defamation lawsuit from Favre was fake. “Honestly, I was like, ‘Oh, this has gotta be fake,’” McAfee said via FOS.
“I thought it was like [WWE commentator] Michael Cole or maybe [former NFL kicker Adam] Vinatieri. There are humans in my life who would certainly go through a lot of things just to be like, ‘Oh, I got you.’ I thought it was a rib. But I guess this is real life. It’s part of my life now, you know?” Unfortunately for McAfee, the lawsuit turned out to be very real and he took it head-on. He said, “Let’s ride this f**ker!” when he revealed on his show about being slapped with a lawsuit by the Green Bay great.
Brett Favre filed the lawsuits against Pat McAfee and Shannon Sharpe separately. McAfee’s case was filed in Lamar County, Mississippi which he had moved to a federal court on Friday. This is a small victory for the 35-year-old because state courts sometimes tend to be partial in their judgment if the defendant is an out-of-state native.
Pat McAfee only said what everyone was thinking and the conclusion was already widespread on the Internet regarding Brett Favre’s involvement. With the lawsuit being filed, McAfee’s lawyers have the freedom to strip down Favre’s reputation and investigate in detail all the scandals he has been named him. Favre has inadvertently made the move that will defame his name and legacy much more than McAfee’s statement.
A couple of days back, Mississippi State Auditor Shad White released a string of messages on Twitter that revealed Brett Favre knew about the origin of the money being sent his way and he choose to ignore it and went ahead anyways. The messages read: “Favre asked, ‘Would this solve the brick and mortar issue?’… Again, Favre knew that grant funds could not be used for brick and mortar construction, but he sought to secretly obtain those funds for that purpose anyway.
“He asked, ‘Will the public perception be that I became a spokesperson for various state-funded shelters, schools, homes, etc…. and was compensated with state money? Or can we keep this confidential?’”
This latest development will give Pat McAfee’s lawyers more proof to tear down Favre’s reputation causing him more harm and even losing the case. The case is a long way from trial and maybe the best thing for Favre to do is settle it outside court. Let’s see what the legendary quarterback chooses to do with the latest developments in his case.
